Other ways to protect your identity
Whilst Selftrade Identity Monitor helps to protect your information online, there are other steps you can take to protect your identity and reduce your risk. Used together with Selftrade Identity Monitor, you will become a harder target for fraudsters.
Take care when discarding personal documents
Criminal organisations have been known to employ people solely to search through bins for any trace of financial records or documents containing clues to a person's identity.
It is strongly recommended that you tear up or shred documents containing personal information before discarding them, including used envelopes with your name and address on them. Shredders are inexpensive and make destroying traces of your personal information simple.
Always check your bank statements as soon as they arrive
If you bank online, you can check your recent transactions even more regularly. Doing this can provide early warnings of any suspicious activity.
Check your credit report regularly
You should regularly check your credit report to make sure that no one has used your identity to obtain credit. Personal credit reports can be viewed at minimal cost from any of the three main agencies (Equifax, Experian, Callcredit).
Your credit report contains details of all bank accounts, credit / store cards, and loans in your name. If you see something on your report that you do not recognise, follow it up.
